During Step 98.3, you are asked to install the starter motor assembly (Parts 98C + 98D) into the engine bay.
At this stage of the build, the engine and transmission are already installed, which means access to the mounting area can be quite restricted. This is expected, and the starter motor can still be fitted successfully.
Where should the starter motor be fitted?
The starter motor 98C + 98D is positioned on the transmission bell housing, as shown in the assembly instructions.
There is no locating tab, recess or guide mark on the model to indicate the exact mounting position. You should therefore use the image in the assembly instructions to help identify the correct location and orientation.
How do I attach the starter motor?
The starter motor is secured using the adhesive stickers provided, rather than screws.
To fit it:
- Assemble Parts 98C and 98D as shown in the instructions.
- Locate the starter motor mounting position on the transmission bell housing.
- Use the assembly guide image to check the position and orientation before attaching it.
- Apply the supplied adhesive as instructed.
- Carefully manoeuvre the starter motor into the engine bay.
- Once correctly positioned, press it firmly but carefully into place so the adhesive can secure it.
The area is difficult to reach – is this normal?
Yes. Because the engine has already been assembled and installed in the vehicle by Stage 98, access to the starter motor mounting point is limited.
The position can be reached, although you may need to carefully manoeuvre the starter motor around the surrounding components.
The use of adhesive rather than screws makes installation easier, as you only need to correctly position the component and press it into place.
I cannot find a mounting hole or locating point
This is normal.
There is no mounting hole, tab, recess or positioning mark for the starter motor assembly.
The component is positioned using the assembly guide as your visual reference and then held in place with the supplied adhesive.
You do not need to drill a hole or modify any of the surrounding components.
Good to Know
Although fitting the starter motor at this stage can be a little awkward due to the limited space in the engine bay, this does not indicate that parts are missing or that the model has been assembled incorrectly.
Before attaching the starter motor, compare Parts 98C + 98D with the assembly guide and identify the mounting position. Once you are happy with the location and orientation, carefully press the assembly into place using the supplied adhesive.
